"Shame on Friar Diego de Landa!"

I was frankly quite moved by the information I learned from watching, "Cracking the Maya Code". Specifically the treatment of the Mayan people. I actually couldn't access the site from the angel website but not a big deal, just went to the PBS site. I never knew this ever occurred and am so thankful for the opportunity to discover such history. So I began with the "Shame on Friar Diego de Landa" title because that is exactly what I said when watching this segment. I was so disgusted by the intolerance he purpetraded on these people simply because their views were different than his. A man who took it upon himself to be their judge and implement horrific atrocities amongst these people. In doing so he also stripped the world of history so powerful and meaningful to all. It's very eye opening to see this and realize that many people throughout history have paid a heavy price from the intolerance of others. What a shame.

I agree completely that there is a shame here. Our world view now is much broader than that of the Friar's time though. You have to understand his position. He worked on a principle of truth. And truth by definition can't be two different views. Please understand that I don't agree or disagree with his view. What has happened is that he, as a learning human interpreted the truth, In what you and I would say, wrongly. We can't be absolutely stuck on the idea that we are write and he was wrong either otherwise we are going to be just like him, but on the other end of the spectrum. Openness and tolerance is all we massively inaccurate creatures can do. I believe war is wrong. and at the same time, I believe we should fighting for what is right also. The Friar obviously took it too far. Sadly we as a world society have not come to that conclusion just yet.

On a side note, if us community college educated students know this, You're damn skippy that our world leaders know too and more. As soon as we as mass know better, they will have a hard time exploiting us in that manner again. Not to throw out a cliche, but this is why I believe education is truly power.

I know WHY our education is underfunded at all times. When economic times are bad, it's easy to use the low-funds excuse. But have you notice how that excuse is used in times of prosperity as well? I always vote in favor of money for our schools; always.

A word to the wise; don't let them tell us that just reading, writing and arithmetic is all of what is education is composed of. There's also philosophy (helps to be creative in abstract, logical, critical thinking), music (helps to be creative in abstract, logical, and critical thinking), and art (helps to be creative in abstract, and critical thinking). I don't mean to sound all patriotic, but we are to demand more from our leaders if we are to grow not just as a nation but as citizens of this planet.

Gina,The people who irritate me the most are the people who think they know it all and feel that everyone who doesn’t think like them are inferior. Examples of these types of people are bullies, drunks, terrorists, and Diego de Landra. Everyone has their opinion and sometimes we need to do as Mauricio stated fight, but I hope that everyone begins the approach of fighting without fighting. Every situation is different and I hope you don’t think I am trying to show everyone I know it all. There are thousands of people who will take away information or even people from this world that they feel do not belong and it will never change. Shame on them
